The American and British embassies condemn Ilir Meta's attacks on SPAK

The American and British embassies in Tirana have reacted in relation to the statements coming from politics against SPAK.

Through social networks, embassies reiterate their strong support for SPAK and condemn political attacks.

These reactions came after the chairman of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, said that the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, had started investigations against him, after a meeting he had with the former head of the FBI under investigation, Charles McGonigal.

Duman responded to Meta's allegations by saying he has never met McGonigal.

US Embassy Response: We welcome the KLP's condemnation of the direct and indirect attacks against SPAK in recent days and weeks. We will continue to stand by the overwhelming majority of Albanian citizens who support the new justice institutions and the key role they play in Albania's democracy. The US stands with law-abiding legal professionals and will support all those who seek to end impunity.

British Embassy Response: British Ambassador Alastair King-Smith reiterated the UK's strong support for the Special Prosecutor's Office of Albania, SPAK and its vital efforts to improve accountability and end impunity in the interests of all citizens Albanians. The ambassador confirmed at the joint meeting of SPAK donors, last week, the commitment of the United Kingdom to provide additional assistance and capacity building for the work of SPAK, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the special chief prosecutor, Altin Dumani and The National Crime Agency (NCA), as well as joint investigations with other UK law enforcement agencies.
