At least 34 people have lost their lives after heavy rains caused floods and landslides in Petropolis, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the latest report from the Rio de Janeiro Department of Fire and Civil Protection, it is not yet known how many people are missing.

The city received more rain in one afternoon than the historical average for all of February, Rio's Civil Defense said, and the municipality has declared a state of public disaster in Petropolis.

Videos posted on social media show images of cars being dragged by strong currents, and records show there have been 207 calls for help from firefighters.

Claudio Castro, the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, traveled to Petropolis and announced that firefighters and public employees from other cities would help deal with the effects of the heavy rains.

In early February, at least 24 people died after heavy rains hit Sao Paulo, causing floods and landslides across the Brazilian state.
