Macron raises the retirement age, protests erupt in France

Macron decided to raise the retirement age without a vote in parliament. This has fueled resentment and a wave of protests has erupted.

Police in Paris have clashed with protesters.

Crowds gathered in the Place de la Concorde in response to the raising of the retirement age from 62 to 64.

The plans had sparked two months of heated political debate and hunger strikes.

Finally, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne through Article 49:3 of the constitution - allowed the government to avoid a vote in the Assembly.

The decision was made minutes before MPs were to vote on the controversial bill, as there was no guarantee of winning a majority.

The dispute once again makes France appear irreformable. Compared to other European countries, the change in the retirement age is not dramatic at all.

But the bill is regularly described by opponents as "brutal", "inhumane" and "degrading".
