Angela Merkel rejects the task offered to her at the UN

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said no to a job offer at the United Nations.

UN sources confirmed that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had asked Merkel to lead an advisory panel on a "common agenda" for governance that emerged following the pandemic late last year.

"Merkel spoke with the UN Secretary-General last week, thanked him and told him she would not accept offer l," her office said in a statement, confirming media reports.

Merkel, 67, stepped down last month and was succeeded by Social Democrat Olaf Scholz at the head of a tripartite coalition with the pro-business Greens and Free Democrats.

Despite speculation about what she might do next, Merkel hinted that she now wants to have a quiet life.

However, her longtime aide Beate Baumann revealed last month that they were collaborating on summarizing Merkel's political memoirs, a project that could take two to three years.
