From a New York prison, 24-year-old arrested Hadi Mattar spoke to the New York Post newspaper after the stabbing.

"He attacked Islam with the "Satanic Verses", said the 24-year-old, who, however, admitted that he had read only two pages of the novel.

"I don't like him. I don't think he is a very good person. I do not like it. He is someone who attacked Islam, his value system," said the 24-year-old.

When the attacker was asked if Ayatollah Khomeini, who in 1989 issued a fatfa (religious death sentence) against Salman Rushdie, was a source of inspiration for him, Mattar did not answer.
