On International Holocaust Day, Veliaj: Peoples should be united and not divided

On the International Holocaust Day, the mayor Erion Veliaj, with the former President, Alfred Moisiu, and a delegation from Israel commemorated the lives lost during the Second World War.
“We remember Holocaust Day as a way not to mourn the time or the losses, but as a way to remember that those losses and those sufferings will not happen again; not to happen not only to the Jewish people, but not to happen to any other people. While Europe is at war again, I don't believe there is a more suitable moment to remember which mistakes should not be made again in history and which is the way to unite and not to divide the nations", said Veliaj .
The Mayor said that Tirana is a small country, but with a big heart.
"I very much hope that this will not be your last visit, to a country and city like Tirana, which has contributed to save the Jews and where the Jewish population, after the Second World War, was ten times larger than before the war, to show that the size of the country does not matter, the country's population does not matter, nor the country's economy; the heart of the country is important and this country is a small country, but with a very big heart. I am glad that this memorial has become a point of pilgrimage for the entire Jewish community visiting Tirana, as a reminder of our city, of those difficult days that should never return. If we think that the fight against discrimination is over, I believe we only have to look at the news of the day, how anti-Semitism continues, racism continues, divisive policies continue,
Yehiel Bar, ish-nënkryetar i Parlamentit të Izraelit, tha se ndihet i nderuar që ndodhet në Shqipëri dhe se nuk do harrojë kurrë mikpritjen që ky vend i ka bërë popullit hebre. Ai vlerësoi kryetarin e Bashkisë së Tiranës për ngritjen e monumentit në kujtim të hebrenjve që humbën jetën gjatë Luftes së Dytë Botërore.
“Unë jam djali im madh i një të mbijetuari të Holokaustit, jam rritur në shtëpi me këtë ndjesi dhe ajo që duhet të themi për Holokaustin, është që “nuk dot ta harrojmë kurrë”. Por zakonisht kur e themi këtë, e themi sepse nuk do ta harrojmë kurrë se çfarë bënë nazistët dhe do t’ia kujtojmë botës, por këtu në Shqipëri themi mos e harro kurrë, sepse gjithashtu ne nuk do ta harrojmë kurrë se çfarë bëtë ju si shqiptarë për popullin hebre. Në fakt i vetmi vend në histori, pa dyshim, në Europë, që kishte më shumë heberenj pas luftës, sesa përpara saj. Kështu që, ne “nuk do ta harrojmë kurrë” miqësinë tuaj dhe kjo aleancë mes Izraelit dhe Shqipërisë do jetë gjithmonë shumë e fortë, sepse është nga zemra dhe nuk është interes. Jo të gjithë qytetet në botë kanë një monument të tillë. Për ne, që të shohim këtë monument prestigjioz, që na kujton të gjithë shqiptarët dhe këtë vend të mrekullueshëm, atë çfarë ndodhi në histori, është një nder i madh dhe ju falenderojmë në emër të gjithë delegacionit”, ish-nënkryetari i Parlamentit të Izraelit.
The president of the WZO (World Zionist Organization), Yaakov Hagoel, on behalf of the Jewish people, thanked all Albanians for the sport and support that Albania has given them during the war years.
"I want to thank you for what your parents did for our parents, and also for what you are doing today. The monument that we have here, the discussion that we will hold in parliament, is no less important than what happened in the past, such as your support in support of Israel. Therefore, I want to thank you and I will personally tell the president and the prime minister about your positions here in Tirana and about what we are experiencing here. I have come to thank you on behalf of the Jewish people", he concluded.
