Albania, a record in Europe for the number of bars and restaurants

Starting a business in Albania does not require any special model.

All order or towards trade or service shops and above all behind bars or restaurants. According to INSTAT data, at the end of 2019, in Albania there were about 16 thousand restaurant bars (4 thousand restaurants and 12 thousand bars), which account for about 15.4% of private entities in Albania.

The share of bars and restaurants in the total number of businesses in Albania is the highest in Europe, according to other data from Eurostat and statistical institutes in the region, compiled by Monitor.

In the European Union (with 27 countries), only 7% of businesses are in the food and beverage sector (bars and restaurants). The EU record is held by Croatia, with 11.7%.

Albanians turn out to like to spend time in coffee more than most European countries, while in third place is Kosovo, with 11.2% of entities that provide food and beverage service.

Less ranked countries that have the economy associated with tourism activity, such as Montenegro (11%), Cyprus (10.8%), Spain (10.6%), Greece (10%).

In the region, the least fond of coffee are Serbs, where only 4% of entities belong to the activity of food service and beverages. The data of the Statistical Institute of Serbia show that in Serbia there are less than 4 thousand bars and restaurants, or 4 times less than in Albania, although its population is 2.5 times higher than in Albania.

At the bottom of the list are countries like Poland, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, with less than 3% of their businesses operating in bars and restaurants.

150 euros / capita, spending on bars and restaurants reached a record in 2019

In 2019, INSTAT data show that the number of restaurants increased by 26%, reaching about 4 thousand, while that of bars shrank by 18.7%.

Ndonëse në total, numri i bareve e restoranteve në vend ra me 10.7%, të ardhurat e tyre, apo shpenzimet e shqiptarëve, arritën një nivel rekord në 2019-n prej 51.8 miliardë lekësh, ose rreth 420 milionë euro, ose 150 euro/frymë. Sipas INSTAT, në krahasim me 5 apo 6 vjet më parë, shpenzimet për kafene e restorante janë dyfishuar.

Në total, në bare dhe restorante janë të punësuar rreth 45 mijë persona në 2019-n, sipas INSTAT, me rënie prej 4% me bazë vjetore. Norma mesatare e fitimit për këtë aktivitet është rreth 11.2%. megjithatë vlerësohet që sektori ka informalitet të lartë.

In 2020 the bars and restaurants sector has suffered a major setback, initially due to several months of quarantine in the first half of the year and then due to restrictions on evening hours. Short-term statistics of INSTAT show that the volume index, of Bar-Restaurants, marked a strong decline of 55% in the second quarter, in the quarantine period, while in the third and fourth, the contraction was 25% and 19% respectively.
