In Tirana 33.5% of the population, the only city that increased in 2022

Tirana continues to be overpopulated. According to the latest report of the Institute of Statistics, Tirana is the only district of the country, which recorded an increase in population in 2022, compared to the previous year.

The capital grew by 0.6%, registering over 925 thousand inhabitants on January 1 of this year.

The other 11 counties recorded a decrease:

The largest population decreases were recorded in the counties of Gjirokastër (- 3.6%), Berat (- 3.1%) and Dibër (- 2.9%). According to official statistics, Tirana occupies about 33.5% of the total population, continuing to be one of the most populated counties in the country, followed by Durrës and Fieri with 10.5% and 9.8% respectively.

As for the other counties, five of them occupy respectively from 1.9% to 4.1% of the total population. Demographic movements have increased compared to a year ago. In 2022, the number of immigrants was 13,963 people: 51.9% more, compared to 2021.

At the national level, the population has decreased to 2,761,785 inhabitants, suffering a decrease of 1.1%, compared to January 1, 2022.
