Trump says he expects to be arrested Tuesday and calls for protests

Former US President Donald Trump says he could be arrested on Tuesday and called on his supporters to protest against such a move.

"Illegal leaks from the Manhattan District Attorney's office say that the Republican candidate and former President of the United States of America will be arrested on Tuesday of next week without any provable crime. Protest, give us back the nation", writes Trump in a post on the "Truth Social" platform.

One of Trump's lawyers said his claim was based on several media reports.

For five years, prosecutors in New York have been investigating former porn star Stormy Daniels' claims that she was paid $130,000 by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen before the 2016 election in exchange for silence about a alleged connection.

Trump denies they had sex and dismissed the case as politically motivated.

If Trump is charged, it would be the first criminal case ever brought against a former US president, who is also the Republican presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

The district prosecutor's office has not yet commented.
