How was the alphabet born?

How was the alphabet born?

By Cody Cottier

Written English, along with most modern languages, is so closely related to its alphabet that we can take it for granted today. In fact, although the first evidence of writing comes from the 5,000-year-old Sumerian cuneiform, it took humans another millennium to perfect the method of language ordering that most of us now learn as children.

The alphabet seems to have been first invented by Semitic workers in Egypt almost 4000 years ago. The scheme they created, known as Proto-Sinaitic writing, was an attempt to reuse hieroglyphics for their language.

Egyptologists discovered the first of these inscriptions in the first decades of the twentieth century, noting their clear hieroglyphic influence. They were found in the Sinai Peninsula, so scholars have speculated that the Proto-Sinaitic alphabet originated there, around 1600 BC.

It was not until the 1990s that Yale University Egyptologist John Darnell and his wife, Deborah Darnell, found an older ancestor in the inscriptions at Wadi El-Hol, or "Valley of Terror," a site along the Nile River in Egypt.

They date to approximately 1800 BC. The inscriptions have not yet been fully translated, but some letters have been deciphered. Some of them are even clearly understandable in English, without the need for translation. For example, the letter M comes to us without much modification.

The Semites seem to have borrowed the hieroglyph for the term "water", a wavy line, to represent the original sound with their word for water "mem". The letter A, started as the symbol of a bull's head, but in successive languages, it quickly turned into a distinct form.

Ancient ABCs

The main difference between the older writing systems - called orthography - and our modern alphabets lies in the speech units that represent them. The cuneiform writing marked whole words or syllables in the form of wedges. The Egyptians and Chinese achieved the same thing through a series of hieroglyphs and letters.

It is the foundation of English, and thanks to European colonization of many other languages as well. But their alphabets, and hybrids, are almost ubiquitous worldwide. The Cyrillic alphabet - used by Russian and other languages in Eastern Europe and Central Asia - is derived from Greek.

Devanagari - the writing of Hindu, Nepali, and Sanskrit, as well as a multitude of South Asian dialects - probably came from a Semitic language (probably Aramaic, spoken by Jesus Christ). In a sense, the written communication style used by billions of people today is simply an evolution of the hieroglyphs that adorn the tomb of the famous Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.
