After Sota, another judge from Fier is expelled: Protection order that could have prevented a murder
Judges Ergys Selmani and Arben Mullaj have been excluded from the justice system for 15 years. The decision was taken by the Independent Qualification Commission following their decision to resign, likely not to face the Vetting process.
It is learned that the Vetting process for the judge of Fier Ergys Selmani had started in December 2019. On July 8, 2021, the Vetting Commission sent the results of the investigation to the judge, leaving him several days to present his materials. Judge Selmani submitted his resignation to the HJC two weeks later. On September 10 of the same year, the Vetting Commission decided to terminate Vetting for the judge by excluding him from the right to be part of justice for the next 15 years.
While in December 2019, the process for the verification of Tirana Judge Arben Mullaj started. According to media reports, on July 13, 2021, Judge Mullaj was informed of the results of the investigation, while on July 15, he resigned. Yesterday the KPC decided to terminate the Vetting process for the judge, also excluding him from justice. The same day, the Vetting Commission expelled from justice Gent Pejon-legal assistant at the Administrative Court of First Instance Tirana, who also submitted his resignation earlier.
In 2018, the Minister of Justice, Etilda Gjonaj, asked the former High Council of Justice to dismiss Judge Selmani. She accused him of delaying the clarification of the order for the protection of the late Liljana Ruka, who was killed by her husband, Ferdinand Rukaj. The incident shocked public opinion, and investigations revealed that the judge had committed serious violations. As a result, police protection for the victim was lacking and her husband, whom she had reported, took her life by throwing her from the fourth floor of the palace.
Meanwhile, on the morning of September 9, the Vetting Commission-KPC expelled from justice the other judge of Fier, Piro Sota, who released Elton Meta from prison, and the latter three days ago took the life of his ex-wife Sabrina Bengaj.
