This year's Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two scientists John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for "fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks."
Hopfield created a structure that can store and reconstruct information.
Hinton in turn devised a method that can independently detect properties in data, which has become important for the large neural networks now in use.
Since 1901 until now, 118 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded, where the youngest laureate was 25-year-old Lawrence Bragg, while the oldest was 96-year-old Arthur Ashkin.
