Bill Gates says 'acute phase' of Covid pandemic will end in 2022
The year 2021 did not bring as much improvement in the pandemic as Bill Gates had hoped.
In a summary post for 2021 on his blog Gates said that although the number of deaths from COVID-19 has been higher this year, despite the Delta variant and the challenges with getting the vaccine, the progress has been tremendous.
"I underestimated how difficult it would be to persuade people to get the vaccine and continue to use masks," said the fourth richest person in the world, worth $ 135 billion.
"Microsoft co-founder is still optimistic about 2022." I think the acute phase of the pandemic will end sometime in 2022, "he said.
His prediction comes as the world deals with a new variant and in the US the cases are approaching 50 million.
"There is no doubt that the Omicron variant is troubling, but here's what we know: the world is better prepared to deal with potentially worse variants than at any other point of the pandemic so far. Communities will still see occasional outbreaks, but medicines of new ones will be available that can take care of most cases and hospitals will be able to handle the rest. " said Gates.
According to Gates currently Covid is approximately 10 times more deadly than the flu, but vaccines and antivirals can reduce its impact by 50 percent.
