Is this the end of democracy?

Democracy around the world has fallen to its lowest point in two decades, a new report says.

Media censorship, unfair elections and the suppression of civil protests are on the rise around the world, according to the German foundation Bertelsmann Stiftung.

Four more countries – Benin, El Salvador, Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia – were classified as autocracies, as they outnumbered democracies by a larger margin than ever before.

Autocratic rule and populism, according to the report, has been fueled by the Covid pandemic, multiple conflicts such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a sharp rise in food costs and economic turmoil.

The survey was based on detailed country reports in collaboration with around 300 experts from leading universities and think tanks in more than 120 countries.
