EU launches 'traffic light' system today: Who is allowed to travel to

The "EU traffic light" system, proposed by the European Commission in September, was formalized in Luxembourg today. According to this proposal, governments aim to avoid closing the borders, which would have dire consequences for the Eurozone economies, but also to impose a mandatory buffer on all persons entering the red zones.

Under the agreement, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control will publish a weekly map of the regional situation in EU countries, with a color code based on the level of risk: Green, orange and red.

The information will be made available online, where users can search specific locations to see if borders are open and what restrictions exist, as well as links to country epidemiological information.

The color of the traffic light of a given region will depend on the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days and the rate of positive tests.

While part of this system will be added the color 'gray', for areas where there is insufficient data or where the number of tests performed per 100,000 inhabitants is considered very low.

How it will work:

Travelers coming from an orange, red or gray area may be required to be quarantined upon arrival.

Those coming from green areas defined by common criteria will not suffer any kind of restriction on movement and travel.
