Greece approved decree on 12-mile expansion in the Ionian Sea

The Greek government approved the decree for the 12-mile extension to the Ionian Sea. The presidential decree was approved after being presented to the Supreme Court signed by the prime minister and members of the Council of Ministers, through which it "reserves the right to the government to exercise its respective rights in other areas of its territory."

The news is reported by the Greek media "Protothema", which writes that the expansion of territorial waters in the Ionian Sea area, in accordance with the International Convention on the Law of the Sea, automatically translates into an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), ie a maritime area in which a state has the right to explore or exploit marine resources including the production of electricity.

"The Greek government is thus sending a message to Turkey after the green light for the extension of territorial waters from 6 to 12 nautical miles to the Ionian and Ionian islands on Cape Tainaro in the Peloponnese. At the same time, the demarcation of the baselines in the Ionian Sea region and the closure of the bays, as well as the expansion of territorial waters in the Ionian Sea, pave the way for the drafting of the Greece-Albania agreement at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. "Resolving the dispute over the designation of maritime zones, something that has already been agreed during the visit of Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in Tirana and the meeting he had with the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama", writes "Protothema" ./ Source Protothema
