Rainfall situation: Vjosa River poses a risk of flooding, Meteoalb shows areas

Today at noon is expected to have an intensification of rain throughout the country, but more intense in the north-south corners. In forecasting the weather regarding the risk of floods, Meteoalb notes that the situation on the Vjosa River and its tributaries, in the southern mountain streams poses an increased risk of floods due to heavy rainfall in northwestern Greece, which translated into additional feeds for the Vjosa.

As for the mountainous areas, Meteoalb predicts that from this morning until Monday morning, mainly snowfall is expected in the eastern mountainous areas; in the remote areas of Kukës, Dibra, another 60-70 cm of snow is expected, while less in the mountainous area from Librazhd to down to Bilisht.

Forecasts estimate a 10% INCREASE in the total amount of rainfall but a decrease of almost 15% in the amount of snow that is expected to fall throughout Albania. This increase in the amount of rainfall is offset by less snowfall in mountainous terrain. Today, rainfall remains light to moderate in the central areas of the country, but moderate and often intense rainfall continues in the north-south corners until after midnight. Sunday presents with mostly light rainfall in most parts of the country situation which continues until noon when again there will be an intensification of rainfall up to medium throughout the country but high intensity rainfall in the north-south corners. Only on Monday morning a significant weakening of precipitation is expected and the situation with low precipitation continues until close to midnight when there will be a last but weaker strengthening, of precipitation in the northeastern areas. From Sunday morning until Monday morning, mainly snowfall is expected in the eastern mountainous areas; in the remote areas of Kukës, Dibra, another 60-70 cm of snow is expected, while less in the mountainous area from Librazhd to down to Bilisht.

EXPLANATION: There is a risk of high inflows mainly in the northern rivers as a result of the contribution of rainfall from across the border (Montenegro, Kosovo, Northern Macedonia) while the situation will be calmer in the rivers of central areas such as Mati, Erzeni , Shkumbini and Semani. While the situation on the Vjosa River and its tributaries, in the southern mountain streams poses an increased risk of flooding as a result of intense rainfall in northwestern Greece, rainfall which translates into additional inflows to the Vjosa.
