Study in Britain: A dose of vaccine lowers the risk of infection, but can the

The chances of becoming infected with Covid drop significantly after the first dose of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines. This has recently been discovered by a study in Britain. According to the study, the vaccines worked just as well for people over the age of 75 and those with health problems. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Oxford University study found a strong antibody response in all clusters from both doses.

The study is based on the virus tests of 370,000 people in Britain providing further evidence on the effectiveness of vaccines and the protection of humans.

In the first study, those vaccinated with a single dose from Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech were found to be 65% less likely to get a new infection from Covid.

Three weeks after vaccination, taken between December 2020 and early April 2021, symptomatic infections fell by 74%, while reported asymptomatic infections fell by 57%. Those who received a second dose of Pfizer vaccine were 90% less likely to become infected.

The study showed that both vaccines were effective against the British variant of the virus, Kent (B117) which was circulating at the time.

Dr. Koen Pouwels, senior researcher in the Department of Population Health at Oxford University Nuffield, said the data support the decision to extend the gap between doses being injected.

"Protection against new infections from a single dose supports the decision to extend the time between the first and second doses to 12 weeks to maximize initial vaccination coverage and reduce hospitalizations and deaths."

However, he said the data showed that there was still a chance that vaccinated people would become infected with Covid and pass it on to others. He emphasizes the need for social distancing and wearing a mask.
