Why is the virus situation critical in Europe? Experts talk about a mutation

A coronavirus mutation found in Spanish farmers has spread rapidly in Europe, and now accounts for the majority of cases in Britain. This has been revealed by a recent study published in the British media Metro, which shows a variant of the virus called 20A.EU1 that spread from farmers to local populations in Spain in June and July.

Tourists from European countries who went to Spain this summer are said to have returned to their home countries with the virus spreading across Europe. The study found that in Wales and Scotland the variant of this virus mutation accounted for about 80% of cases in mid-September, while the frequencies in England were around 50% at the time.

The experts who conducted this study say that further evidence will be needed to reach this conclusion with complete facts. Dr Emma Hodcroft, an evolutionary genetic expert at the University of Basel and lead author of the study, told the BBC:

'We know there was a super spread of the virus among agricultural workers in Spain, and we say that the virus has been able to spread to local populations and spread around Spain. This happened in June and July, exactly when European tourists went on vacation to Spain. We think that these tourists have brought that variation of the virus to other European countries. "We are in the process of working with laboratories to inspect mutations more closely, but we actually think this is the main point of the current situation."
