Covid vaccine passport, what is being discussed in the EU about border opening

The European Union is looking at the possibility of opening the borders so that citizens can move freely only if they have a so-called Covid passport, a certificate proving vaccination.

The news has been confirmed according to REL, also from the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels, but due to some problems that may be encountered, it should be reviewed at EU level.

European Commission experts say this would be similar to a negative virus test, which is now required in some countries to cross the border.

The idea first came from the Greek Prime Minister, who presented it in a letter to the European Commission and EU political leaders.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has also supported her, although it was clarified that she expressed this in a personal capacity, due to her experience as a former employee in the health sector.

A virtual summit between EU leaders is scheduled for January 21 to discuss the idea.

However, some problems arise:

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has said that such an idea will create a great frustration if it starts to be implemented too early, because according to him, no one knows when all the citizens who want to be vaccinated can be vaccinated. to be vaccinated.

EU member states are facing delays in the initial vaccination process, because there are still not enough vaccines on the market.

Many experts have warned that states cannot discriminate against those who have not been vaccinated if they have not been vaccinated at the same time.

The idea also touches on the issue of human rights. In EU member states, vaccination is not mandatory in principle.

If the vaccination certificate is required as a "travel passport", then in a way vaccination becomes mandatory to exercise the right of freedom of movement.

The possibility of vaccination for foreign nationals as a condition for entering the EU territory was also mentioned.

The idea of "COVID-19 passports" is also highly questionable from an epidemiological point of view because there is no evidence that vaccinated people who may have immunity do not spread the virus to others.
