The United Nations has voted by a narrow margin to remove cannabis from the list of the most dangerous drugs in the world. Cannabis was ranked IV by the UN Commission along with heroin, fentanyl, and other opioids which are often deadly.

But the decision to remove it from the list follows the recommendation of the World Health Organization last year, to make international research and control of medical cannabis use easier.

27 member states, including the US and European countries, voted in favor of declassifying cannabis as deadly and high-risk.

China, Egypt, Russia, Pakistan and Nigeria were among the 25 countries that voted against, while Ukraine abstained.

But that does not mean it will be legalized worldwide. The drugs on list IV are a subset of those on list I of the convention, which already requires the highest levels of international control.

The agency however noted the public health problems arising from cannabis use and did not support the WHO recommendation to remove cannabis extracts from list 1.

Canada and Uruguay have legalized the sale and use of cannabis for recreational purposes, along with 15 states in the US. Meanwhile many countries in the world have decriminalized marijuana possession. The issue lies in the medical benefit as a remedy against the potential harm it may cause.
