The EU may no longer order AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines

The European Union is unlikely to continue buying AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccines next year. This was stated by French Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher. She did not say the EU had made a formal decision, but stressed that no further doses would be ordered.

AstraZeneca is the most debated vaccine of the moment due to suspicions that it is related to the cases of rare blood clots in people who have received this vaccine. Denmark is the country that the day before decided to permanently ban the use of AstraZeneca. But meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be vaccinated today with this type of vaccine, to calm German public opinion.

The French Minister said:

"We have not started talks with Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca for a new contract, but we have started talks with Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna."

Most countries have resumed vaccinations with AstraZeneca, but with restrictions for older age groups. The European Medicines Agency last week announced a possible link between the vaccine and blood clots, however it added that the risk of death from Covid-19 without the vaccine is much higher.
