The three Albanian cities with the highest number of vehicles per inhabitant

From 2015 to 2019, the number of vehicles per capita nationwide increased by 24% according to INSTAT data. In some parts of the country, growth has been stronger and in others, lower.

According to INSTAT estimates, in 2019, Tirana had 228 road vehicles per passenger per 1000 inhabitants. Almost one in four residents in Tirana is estimated to have a vehicle. After Tirana comes Durrës, for the high number of vehicles per passenger, estimating 207 such per 1000 inhabitants. Approximately one in five Durrës residents owns a vehicle.

Lezha ranks third in the 12 regions of the country, with 215 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. From 2015 to 2019 the number of vehicles per capita in this district increased by 36%.
On the other hand, the regions of Dibra, Elbasan, Korça and Kukës have the lowest number of vehicles per capita. In Debar there are 120 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants in 2019, the lowest level in the country. But from 2015 to 2019, the number of vehicles in relation to the population in Debar has seen the largest increase nationwide, with about 55%.

Elbasan comes second after Dibra with only 135 vehicles per 1000 inhabitants and then Korça, with 151 such.
During the period 2015-2019, there is an increase of 23.9% of the number of road vehicles per passenger per 1,000 inhabitants, where Dibra Region has the largest increase, while Gjirokastra Region, the lowest increase by 3.1% .

Tirana Region occupies 32.5% of the total road transport vehicles for goods or 30.0 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants in 2019. While the number of road vehicles for goods per 1,000 inhabitants in the country, from 2015 to 2019 has increased by 6.4 %, where the highest increase is presented in the Region of Dibra with 22.4%, while the Region of Gjirokastra has the largest decrease compared to other regions, with 13.5%.

More vehicles, fewer accidents

Although the number of vehicles in circulation has increased, accidents on the contrary have decreased. In the period 2015-2019, the number of injured per 10,000 inhabitants shows a declining trend. In 2019, there are an average of 7 accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. The highest value of this indicator for 2019, reaches 20 injured per 10,000 inhabitants in the Region of Lezha, while the lowest value is recorded in the Region of Dibra and Shkodra, with respectively 2 injured per 10,000 inhabitants.
